Is it normal to lose 8 pounds in the first week or is it just water weight

  • #2
"Normal" doesn't really exist given the differences between everyone. In general, the more weight you have to lose the quicker the initial loss will be. How much will vary from person to person.

If you keep losing 8lbs per week, I'd say you need to re-evaluate your plan. That's far too much to lose every week.

      What he said!

Also, if you are eating less, then there is probably more "waste" in your digestive system than is being created by the food intake, so there will be an initial loss of "weight" that is actually just a reduction in bowel contents.

Icky subject, I know, but there you go. In the first week it is hard to judge where the weight is coming from. It nominally takes two days for food to pass completely through you, so you should take that into account.

Genetics, eating habits, water intake, what you are doing to lose the weight ... just too many factors to take into account. Initially weight loss will be much higher as it is a shock to your system however later on the loss should slow down and you should only be looking at smaller increments every week. If you lose too much for an extended period of time like many do for fad diets than you should expect to gain that back and so much more. You need to let your body "adapt" to the changes slowly so that it isn't a further shock to your system otherwise your body will go into survival mode. The thing to losing weight properly is implementing a regiment that you can easily following and maintain taking one day at at time. Make it a new habit that you will eventually grow into and find easy and the norm.

This is all true and good advice - on the other hand I managed a sustained weightloss of 2.5Kg per week which all the standard advice says is too high. But I made my weightloss targets - and I have (so far) kept it off!!!

This just confirms that everyone is different and that the standard advice doesn't always apply to everyone. I was told I was "Doing it wrong" because I effectively stopped eating for a short period every week. Now "intermittent fasting" seems to be the latest fad coming in.

It worked for me, but that doesn't mean it would work for you.

Find something that does work for you and stick to it. If people tell you that "you're doing it wrong" then you should listen to their opinion, read around the subject and try to determine if your approach is still giving you the vitamins and nutrients you need (taking a daily multivitamin will remove a lot of the guesswork from this! Especially if it has a mineral complex too.).

If the answer is yes, and the technique is working for you, then you should continue even if it's "wrong" but do listen to the "standard advice" and remember it exists for a reason! Please don't make yourself ill by trying too hard and too fast.

          Kind Regards
